ALEX
P
"a
gentleman and a legend"
DJ's
come and DJ's go, there's always some new kid on the block
claiming to be the next big thing. Legends however are a whole
new ball game and are few and far between. Ask most clubbers
over 25 to name their all time DJ hero and ALEX P is sure
to feature on many lips. From humble beginnings, the legend
that is ALEX P has risen to superstar status, wowing legions
of fans across the world. ALEX is simply everyone's favourite
DJ, who immerses himself into his crowd and always hangs back
at the club to meet the dedicated, religious and fanatical
clubbers that come to see him each week. A true club land
veteran who has played every corner of the globe, he is renowned
for bringing dance music to the masses.
The
reason for his success? Well, apart from being a true professional,
he's a crowd pleaser. who knows how to whip the dance floors
into a frenzy with the tunes the clubbers want to hear. He
instinctively knows what records to play and how to weave
the magic, taking the crowd on a magical roller-coaster journey.
Now a respected producer, re-mixer, club owner and radio presenter,
ALEX is at the pinnacle of an amazing career in dance music
spanning over 14 years.
Spinning
into the entertainment industry as part of the UK WARRIORS
break-dancing crew. ALEX, alongside friend and confidant Troy
Harewood, found fame with this acclaimed, electro breaking
crew, appearing regularly on national and children's TV. The
crew then went on to find fame supporting the legendary AFRIKA
BAMBATTA, CURTIS BLOW & AJ SCRATCH on European tours.
It was at this point that ALEX was to learn the skills of
deck wizardry, mixing and scratching at the hands of the masters
Bambatta, Blow, Scratch and Maize.
On
his return to the UK, ALEX discovered clubbing and became
a regular 'face' on the London club scene in particular at
the renowned LEGENDS nightclub in London. Standing at the
back of the DJ booth, he closely watched his heroes of the
day, the 'governors' FABIO & GROOVERIDER control the crowds
with their ground-breaking sets. At any opportunity ALEX would
get behind the decks to warm up or fill in for FAB & GROOVE
if they were ill or late. The club became very popular in
its time with stars such as Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper,
Seal and Nigel Benn. Even pop stars of the moment such as
Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp were sometimes turned away.
A
regular gig at Legends on Monday nights called CLUB TRICK,
playing alongside such luminaries as PAUL OAKENFOLD, COLIN
HUDD and DOMINIC SPREADLOVE followed. This night was a resounding
success, firmly propelling Alex's star into orbit and on the
London club scene with his first residency. Alex said, "The
scene was beginning to explode as a counter culture movement
began to develop following the recession of the early 80's.
Club culture began to break down social barriers, labourers
and stockbrokers rubbed shoulder's with each other to experience
the music and forget about their money worries. It was an
unbelievable vibe!"
It
was through his residency that ALEX became good friends with
socialites PAUL DENNIS and DENZEL ROBERTS and would often
find himself at some of their private parties for the rich
and famous and ended up DJing at the parties. It was through
this friendship that ALEX was to be invited to one of the
infamous SUNRISE parties where his heroes FABIO & GROOVERIDER
were late for a set. PAUL DENNIS fully aware of his DJing
talents pushed ALEX up onto the stage and he found himself
with no alternative but to get behind the decks and play to
thousands of clubbers.
By
now his deck skills were being honed and it was not long before
his skills were being called upon to take centre stage for
a night called CRAZY CLUB at THE ASTORIA which was promoted
by the charismatic JAMES MITCHEL. CRAZY CLUB became one of
the biggest club nights of its time in London and the queues
were as famous as the club nights itself. It was through ALEX
that the CRAZY CLUB and its regular clubbing faithful were
introduced to RAY KEITH, JAMES MITCHELL, SLIPMATT and JASON
KAY, who all went on to become highly respected DJs of the
Drum & Bass and Garage scenes.
By this time ALEX had been a regular visitor to the Balearic
island of Ibiza and was longing for the challenge to take
his style of music to the Island. Towards the end of the eighties
he decided to pack his bags and left for Ibiza. He took odd
jobs around the island to pay his rent, whilst trying to secure
DJ gigs. He eventually began to play at a SAN ANTONIO club
called SUMMUMS. Decorated by SALVADOR DALI this unusual club
played host to ALEX'S first night called "Eye Beria."
This night was so popular that every evening the club was
packed to the rafters from early evening, way into the early
hours of the next morning and it was not long before the local
press picked up on this exciting young English DJ who was
wowing the crowds at the club.
It
was at this point that the owners of KU and AMNNESIA heard
all of the rave reviews about this English DJ called ALEX
P, that they went down to see what all the fuss was about
and witness it for themselves. English DJ's playing at these
clubs's on the island was unheard of at the time. ALEX impressed
them so much that he was soon to secure residencies at both
clubs, a rare feat indeed at the time. On Monday nights Alex
would play his residency at KU with "Mad Mondays"
hosted by Tommy Mac and Alan Warman, ALEX would then play
his residency at Amnesia every other day.
The
summer of 1990 saw ALEX securing a residency at SPACE inside
the club alongside island DJ heroes Giovanni (Es Paradis)
and DJ Richie (Pascha). Alex would regularly DJ for 14 hours
at a time, a feat that few DJs could match. Whilst DJing,
ALEX had often thought about creating another room or bar
area at SPACE for his own sound, away from the main room.
So after many nights "lost in the music" at SPACE
the idea for the "SPACE TERRACE" was born. ALEX
along with SUNRISE promoter JAMES MITCHELL both saw the opportunity
of developing the terrace. What used to be the coat check
area was soon to be transformed into a bar and DJ booth with
a sound and light system of its own. Not content with DJing
for 14 hours ALEX decided to help build the TERRACE BAR himself.
By day he would be in the thick of it with sound and light
technicians, plumbers and labourers, by night he would be
playing into the early hours of the next day and so the infamous
SPACE TERRACE was born.
The
birth of the TERRACE BAR, introduced a new dimension to the
club which ALEX dubbed "Heaven & Hell". "Hell"
was the hard mental techno music that ALEX played inside,
whilst BRANDON BLOCK took the helm outside on the terrace
with "Heaven" being the funky alternative side to
the club. "Heaven & Hell" soon gathered momentum
and critical acclaim with its own unique reputation around
the world. Consequently this attracted the likes of SASHA,
DJ DAG, SVEN VATH and the likes of MARK SPOON (Germany) to
play at the club. Such was the popularity of this night, that's
DJs simply just wanted to play at the club and would often
ask for a small nominal DJ fee. As a result of the TERRACE
BAR and its success, his popularity with the euro contingent
of DJs, meant that ALEX made many fiends and was often invited
over to Europe as guest DJ in their respective home countries
at the most prestigious clubs including Dorien Gray in Germany,
Peter Pan in Rimini and Taro in Switzerland. This subsequently
introduced ALEX to Europe.
On
their return to the UK, the legendary FUBAR (F***ed Up Beyond
All Recognition) was born. It was the alliance of two of the
worlds biggest "nutters" on the Terrace and LISA
LOUD. Held weekly in NICKY HOLLOWAY'S' infamous "MILK
BAR" the FUBAR parties were a weekly dose of Sunday night
madness to top off the weekend. Operated jointly between ALEX,
BRANDON BLOCK and LISA LOUD, the night was renowned for its
hedonistic, excessive party style. Alex said - "In those
day's anyone who was anyone used to be in there, it was pure
madness." The bonding session of the two nineties DJs
was legendary and their regular 14 hour DJ stints, antics
and parties would bring even the most hardened rock veterans
to their knees. That was the nineties and the story was written.
ALEX P is the longest serving IBIZIAN DJ since his first visit
in 1988. He has held down residencies and has regular gigs
in many of the top club's around the UK including, GATECRASHER,
GODSKITCHEN, MISS MONEYPENNIES, MINISTRY OF SOUND, CREAM,
AREA, COLOURS, CLOCKWORK ORANGE, PASSION and CLOCKWORK, not
to mention the clubs over in Ibiza, KU, AMNESIA and SPACE.
It
was a natural progression for the endearing partnership of
ALEX P & BRANDON to launch their own radio show in true
"Peasey & Blocko" style and so a show on London's
infamous KISS FM was only a matter of time. This ground-breaking
show, broadcast on Friday evenings across the London metropolis,
has been phenomenally successful with over 1.5 million people
tuning in each week to hear the mad cap antics of ALEX and
Brandon. His unique, charismatic and endearing style has seen
ALEX as a natural radio and TV presenter having guest presented
on MTV, Rapture and Clubavision. Few people can forget when
ALEX jumped into the breach for Steve Jackson's Breakfast
show on KISS when all hell broke loose!
Not
content with this, ALEX is widely regarded as a talented re-mixer
and producer who has a broad and diverse repertoire of music
which is seen in the music he is currently making. He has
several compilation albums under his belt including Clockwork
Orange "Havin It In Ibiza" 1 & 2 which was the
first mixed compilation album on CD, "Club Ibiza"
1 & 2, "Up Yer Ronson", "A Decade of Ibiza"
and the recent "Kiss Anthems."
A talented re-mixer, ALEX has transformed many a track into
a clubland classic including; Pee Zee & Blocko "Release
Yourself" which was a huge hit on the garage scene, Dead
Or Alive's classic "You Spin Me Round" and the hip-hop
inspired Black Sheep "North, South, East, West"
ALEX
P is also a creative musician, influenced in his formative
years by an eclectic mix from Punk music to Jazz funk. He
is not a DJ who just mixes a few sounds together and creates
a record. ALEX was in a number of bands during his teenage
years and was a talented musician playing both bass guitar
and trumpet. He has produced full-on anthems including Airtight's
industrial techno inspired "Predator Mix" and the
early trance hit "Forever" by ALEX P. He is currently
working in the studio on some new material, which will be
ready for the turntables and dance floors in the early part
of this year.
ALEX has many new projects underway as we start the new year.
He is joint owner of THE VELVET ROOMS in London which is host
to some of the most cutting edge nights in clubland with CARL
COX, FABIO & GROOVERIDER, NORIS DA BOSS and of course
the "governors" ALEX & BRANDON. An album based
on the club nights and each DJs set is planned for this year
as a special limited edition six pack CD.
There
is also the long term record label project with BRANDON BLOCK
entitled P&B RECORDS which is about to come to fruition
after much work in the studio, while their KISS FM show goes
from strength to strength. ALEX has also set up his own production
company called "Devil Inside" along with music industry
entrepreneur and close friend Troy Harewood and producer Russell
Tate with the aim of producing more artist based projects.
One of the first major projects they are working on is material
from new signing Tony Thompson on both an R&B and garage
vibe.
Renowned
for his partying antic's with BRANDON, ALEX in recent months
has started to concentrate more on his musical and DJ career
and family life with his little boy. Life can only get better
for this charismatic and popular DJ, who has won the hearts
of clubbers worldwide. ALEX P is simply "a gentleman
and a legend"
